Mess Effect Andromeda – part 2

The following is (just) my opinion about the whole Mass Effect Andromeda mess. You are welcome to disagree or agree but I know for a fact I’m not the only one thinking like I do.

Mass Effect Andromeda had so much potential. No, really, it could have been so much more. In the beginning (before the release) it seemed like this could be all we ever wanted – Continuing the Mass Effect story (minus Sheppard of course), exciting new game play/mechanics etc – in hind sight it was probably over-hyped but still, it could have been so much more…

The Good
As far as I’m concern the game itself wasn’t too bad – actually, it was pretty good. Sure, it had its share of issues – bugs, weird graphics anomalies and so on but those are all things that are easily fixable (and BioWare did fix some, perhaps most of them). Most of the characters were good or perhaps just ok (except Liam but that’s another story). Drack was/is still my favorite – perhaps better than old Wrex/Grunt.

The Bad
The biggest ‘issue’ I have is with the attitude EA/BioWare seems to have towards the game’s future and more importantly, how they treated us (or the lack thereof) – the fans of the game/series. It is also not like they gave up just at the end. Even shortly after the game was released there were already internal rumblings, cracks in the matrix… staff being moved around and away from working on Mass Effect. Then there is also the lack of feedback during all this and especially the time that people were complaining or asking for updates about the Quarian ark story line. The complete silence gives a distinct impression that they never intended to actually complete the game. It feels like they purposely abandoned everything just because it is convenient or they had another agenda from the start. This lack of feedback and support is insulting, they might as well have spit in our faces. At the end of the day ‘we’ did not get the basic thing we wanted – a true and a completed story of Mass Effect. If they came back to us saying it will take some time complete the Quarian ark story line that would have been still acceptable. I would have happily waited for it to be finished and then paid money when it was released. But no, that did not happen….

And this leads us to…
The result of this is a big distrust in EA/BioWare and their ability to deliver anything of value. The ending of Mass Effect 3 was not ideal… okay it was bad enough… and now they further insult us by abandoning something before it was even complete or even had a chance to redeem the mess they made.

I for one will be very careful in the future buying anything from EA/BioWare. I thought I could give them the benefit of the doubt after ME3 but sadly I was wrong. They never really planned to deliver anything good. Even Anthem might be just another over-hyped, money sucking black hole created only to make them rich which they’ll happily abandon when it suits them. This is not how you treat your customers.

The Mess of Mass Effect Andromeda

Well, let me start by stating I’m a huge fan of the Mass Effect universe so I’m just throwing a couple of thoughts down here on my blog. I have been playing Mass Effect ever since ME2 came out (somehow missed ME1 when it came out) but I quickly got ME1 and since have lost count how many times I’ve replayed the trilogy over and over and over again…

So of course when Andromeda came along I was as excited as any Mass Effect fan would be. I went full out and preordered the super deluxe version… because.. it’s Mass Effect why not!

Anyway, once released I immediately start playing and… shocker… I actually like it! Yes, the title of this blog entry make it seems like I’m going to moan how bad it is and so on but… no, I actually like Mass Effect Andromeda. Sure, it has it faults like the laggy multiplayer, sound track that is ‘different’ and a few little bugs (like quests getting stuck) but mostly I like it.

The problem with it though is this: lots of other people that didn’t like it and started giving the general impression that this Mass Effect game is bad. So much so that it seems even the developers/creators of it seems to be in retreat, giving up or running away (well that is the impression I’m getting). Why am I saying this:

  1. The downsizing of the development studio that created Andromeda. Yes, it may be normal some times to do this after a release of a game to have people starting to work on other projects but the timing of all of this seems a bit suspicious.
  2. Previously there were talks of a DLC/sequel related to the Quarian ark – even at the end of the game it is hinted that this must be coming. However, since then it has become awfully quiet and seems all talk about a DLC/sequel has disappeared. Perhaps they are busy with it somewhere is secret but the silence plus downsizing together… is making us fans start to worry a bit.

Well, lets hope I’m wrong to worry about this and there will be some more (new) Mass Effect in the future. We would like to know what happen to our Pathfinder and the team plus what the Quarians are up to! Please Bioware, don’t disappoint!

Alpha Centauri – Infographics

This is really cool. On Space.com there is a whole page with a bunch of facts about the Alpha Centauri system, including the newly found planet Alpha Centauri Bb. Most of the stuff I knew about (since these are the kind of things I’m interested in) but seeing things ‘graphically’ really makes it more cool!!

A little perspective

I saw a picture of solar flare this morning comparing it to the size of the Earth. Years ago as a kid I used some old mainframe stream paper to ‘draw’ the solar system at scale (1/1 000 000 000 000). That really puts the whole solar system into perspective (about 9 meters long to fit Pluto on furthest point). The following things could/can be observed using stuff at this ‘scale’.

Scale 1:1 000 000 000 000
Object Description
The Sun A little ball of 1 millimeter in diameter
Earth would be 15 centimeters away from the sun (Moon about 0.4mm away from Earth)
Jupiter about 0.8 meters away (and 0.15mm in diameter)
Saturn about 1.3 meters (rings about 0.2mm in diameter)
Neptune about 4.5 meters
Pluto around 6 meters (average, varies from 4.4m to about 7.3m)
Voyager 1 is about 18 meters away
1 light year is about 11 kilometers away (10.8km)
Proxima Centauri (The closest star) would be about 45 kilometers away!
Sirius (The brightest star) about 93 kilometers away!
Betelgeuse about 6940 kilometers away! (diameter roughly 1 meter estimate)
Alnilam (Epsilon Orionis, middle star of the Orion belt) about 14 000 kilometers away
The largest star known (estimated) has a diameter of about 1.5 meters
Milky way galaxy diameter about 1 000 000 kilometers!
Andromeda galaxy about 24 000 000 kilometers away!!
Speed of light about 1 meter per hour!!!

Kinda put things into perspective – especially the speed of light

Mass Effect 3 ending (or not)

Unfortunately I had to wait an entire week for the ending due to some ‘family responsibility’ issues so when I managed to actually get to the ending it was… well.. I’ll try to explain.

I’m aware of the whole ‘Retake Mass Effect’ movement and that many others feel that the game’s ending was, well, not exactly the best thing since sliced bread. Normally I would try to be a bit more ‘diplomatic’ or neutral but I have to (unfortunately) side with the complainers… Don’t get me wrong, I still think the game is easily one of the best games ‘out there’ but something, somehow just isn’t ‘optimal’.

If I have to summarize the way the ending made me feel it has to be sad, confusing or unfulfilled. The graphics are awesome – especially the space battle scenes. Most of the game (start, middle and up to close to the end) is really good. But the ending part left me confused, perplexed, unsatisfied. Let me try to explain (but it probably would be spoilers for some).

First of the ‘finale’ part of the game feels like just one big cut-scene with no real ‘options’. Yes, the Catalyst give 3 options but it is not implemented in ‘Mass Effect’ dialog style. The whole scene feels dreamy (or nightmarish). Shepard’s reactions/dialog really does not suit the situation – especially since I’ve always played the renegate path when I can. The character’s personality seems dull or boring with no real ‘fire’ left in the spirit like I’m used to. In fact, the most part of the second half of the game I was starting to get that impression that Shepard isn’t ‘Shepard’ any more. I suppose it was done to make the character more ‘human’ but it just doesn’t fit what we’re use to… It could also have something to do with the indoctrination theory that some people have. Who knows…

There is the whole ‘saying goodbye’ part you (Shepard) must do to each character before you enter the final battle grounds. It is almost like they (Bioware) are telling you that all/some of you friends/mates will be dying (which is probably true but why so obvious? The radio dialog of some woman panicking and not knowing what to do any more – why isn’t Shepard allowed to intervene?

Then, the final run towards the ‘beam’ – it doesn’t seem you can do anything useful other than running while people, vehicles and stuff around you gets blown up. What happened to your squad mates? How did Anderson get up to the Citadel before you? Considering he’s an older man which should be slower… Inside the citadel, you end up in a part that has never been discovered (or else someone might have figured out the place has it’s own AI). Somehow the illusive man also makes it to there (though he might be controlled by the Reapers…). You (Shepard) shoots Anderson! Like you are totally being controlled by the Reapers but somehow still have enough ‘willpower’ to argue with the illusive man (and kills him). There are more questions than answers…

Finally the Catalyst explains your options, but movement is still so slow and impaired I didn’t even see where the other options are (I wanted to kill the Reapers but somehow wandered too close to the ‘merge with them option’. In the last cut-scenes the Normandy is flying through a relay and then intercepted by the shock wave of the exploding relay network – crashing on some unknown planet. Joker and EDI (in my ending) gets out both already a mixture of organics and synthetics.. plus some squad mates that happened to be with Shepard just before the final ‘run for the beam’?? How on Earth did they get back to the Ship? Why were they not still in the fight above the Earth? These events might be specific to my choices or how I played the game but you get the general picture – Confusion. Story wise things just don’t add up.

For a game I was looking forward to for such a long time this is not the optimal ending I have hoped for. No, I didn’t expect that winning (destroying the enemy) was going to be the only option or that Sheppard must survive. It seems like none of the 3 options at the end is a true win in any way. Actually, in 2 of them the Reapers actually ‘Win’ while the other option is to go on without any technology at all (or restarting from scratch – literally, just to be able to make all the same mistakes all over again). The ‘story’ is left in a state that begs for more answers!

The things that made ME1 & 2 so great was the way your choices could make a difference to the ending of the game. With 3 it seems (feels like) you might as well have started the game standing next to the Catalyst giving you the final 3 options – because those are the only options that has any real influence on the ending. These options really ‘suck’.

With an ending like this it would be hard if possible at all to have any DLC’s that are meaningful. Nevertheless, this is still is great game if you look at the whole trilogy as one (with one ‘weak’ spot – almost like the Star Wars movies with their Eps 1,2 & 3. The ME3 ending is like Jar-jar… hehe)

Update: there are several articles, blogs etc where people are moaning about the issue. E.g. look at Ars Technica especially the comments…

Real books

For the first time in many years I started reading a real book – well actually a paperback, and I really can’t remember why I stopped doing it. There is just something different about holding a real physical book in your hands – with paper, ink, paper bookmarks etc. Oh the nostalgia…

The book I’m reading now is a real sci-fi classic – ‘Ringworld’ by Larry Niven

Back then (1970) some of the concepts in this book must have been really weird. Instant teleportation, no ‘borders’ between countries, people not aging anymore, extremely strict birth controls, aliens living among humans, personal spacecraft, Hyper-drives etc. Some of these may/are almost becoming real soon. The ideas behind birth controls is something that ‘we’ at this point of time must be starting to look at. Personal spacecraft is something I for one, would really like. But I guess it will still take a few decades/centuries before that could happen. In the mean while they must fix the ‘aging problem’. hehe

Wow!

Rule of odds

Well, this is not strictly a rule per se but it does feel like one. After reading one of the comments on a Tomshardware article I think this deserve some mentioning 🙂

If you judge the Windows releases throughout the years (well averages..) you get this:

win 95: bad
win 98: good (yes actually SE)
win me: bad
win xp:good
win vista: bad
win 7: good
win 8: i think you can guess it now…

Apparently this concept works for Star Trek movies as well 😉 And I was hoping for a ‘good’ next Star Trek movie…

The big wheel of progress

Lots of things follow the big turning wheel of success/failure through time. Sometimes you go up and other times down. Take share prices and/or market share in the IT industry. There was a time (some many moons ago) that Microsoft was soaring high among the clouds but lately it has been skimming the ground and loosing altitude with every flap of their (cripple) wings.

As if being passed by Apple in many market segments aren’t bad enough it now seems another old ally/opponent is passing it by in its way up – The big Blue company – IBM. Reading a post on Ars technica showing a few graphs about share prices over the last decade (or two) it is clear Microsoft is on the downward side of the big wheel of business.
Looking at the graph (below) some interesting events can be seen (like launch of Windows 95/Vista/7). However, the general direction of the ‘Microsoft’ graph is not an ‘upward’ one – oppose to Apple/IBM. It remains to be seen if Microsoft as a company can change this with new products like Windows 8/Phone/Tablet stuff. The perceived position of the company isn’t that of great strength – looking at the management as seen from outside. That doesn’t mean that Microsoft is totally doomed but the shareholders should be starting to worry (if they aren’t already hehe). A lot will ride on Windows 8 as a product and as a new direction for the once monolithic desktop OS company. There is always a chance that history can repeat itself and Microsoft can fight from humble/small beginnings to cover the majority of (a/the) market. Trouble is just that they have more than one powerful adversary this time (not just IBM). This time there are Apple and Google as well. Things certainly are not as simple as in the 80’s…Borrowed from Ars Technica… shamelessly.

Blowing up the planet… kinda..

Nice article from Phil Plait (The guy from Bad Astronomy) wrote an article about the math to do exactly this. Turns out it isn’t that easy (if possible/practical at all) but if you really, really really need to do it….

3 reasons we can’t blow up a planet sci-fi style

There is an easier way to solve the problem of you wanting to ‘kill’ a planet – just leave and find another one that would make you happy. It’s much easier and better (for us still living on this one…)

Space-fi’s

This morning I was just trying to think about how many Space sci-fi (Sci-fi in space with space ships and aliens) series I can think of. Turns out there are quite a few and there seems to be a pattern… Here is a list (in no particular order of preference so not to upset some fanatic fans)

  • Start Trek (5 series’s plus series of movies)
  • Star Wars (technically not TV series but it has Clone wars etc.)
  • Stargate (Movie plus 3 series’s)
  • Battlestar Galactica (2 series’s – old and new)
  • Babylon 5 (series and some TV movies)
  • Space 99 (1 series with 2 seasons, grand daddy of them all)
  • Farscape (1 series plus TV movie)
  • Firefly (1 series plus 1 movie)
  • Buck Rogers (1 series – 1 /1/2 seasons)
  • V (old and new)
  • Andromeda (1 series)
  • Robotech (Ok it is anime but… 3 series’s but can be seen as 1 long series plus movie. Also known as Macross)
  • Lexx (I never saw this myself)
  • Blake’s 7 (I never saw this myself)

Some related series that are (honorary mentions) more general sci-fi are:

  • 2001/2011 – strictly not a series but they follow a sequence (and the books)
  • Dr Who
  • X-Files
  • Alien series of movies
  • Predator series of movies
  • Alien vs Predator movies

These are the ones I can think of now. I might have missed some but these are the most  common ones I can think off. If you can think of more please comment.
